Thyroid Uptake and Scan

Time Required:
Day One: 30 - 45 minutes
Day Two: 1 hour

What is a thyoid uptake and scan?
This is a test that tells your doctor if your thyroid is working properly. We will take "pictures" of your thyroid to see the size and shape of your thyroid gland.

How do I prepare for my thyroid uptake and scan?
You will need to be off any thyroid medication for 4 - 5 days if taking PTU or 1 - 4 weeks if taking Synthroid. You must not have had any IVP, CAT scan or arteriogram dye for 3 months prior to your thyroid uptake and scan.

What can I expect during the test?
This test requires 2 days.

The first day you will talk to the nuclear medicine personnel and receive a small radioactive capsule. You will be told what time to return the next day for your thyroid uptake/scan.

On day 2, you will have several pictures taken of your neck. You must lie very still.

What do I do after my thyroid uptake and scan?
You will be free to leave after your uptake and scan. You will receive your test results from your doctor.
