Time Required:
Upper GI series: 15 to 30 minutes
What is an Upper GI Series?
An Upper GI (Gastrointestinal) Series is an x-ray examination of your esophagus, stomach and duodenum.
Why do I need an Upper GI Series?
You may need an Upper GI if you are having difficulty swallowing, chest pain, reflux, or abdominal pain.
How do I prepare for my Upper GI Series?
You should not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your test.
What can I expect during the test?
You will be given several different liquids to drink for your test. These liquids (barium) will outline your esophagus and stomach and show up on x-ray film. X-ray films will be taken as you drink the barium.
What do I do after my Upper GI Series?
After the Upper GI you should resume your routine diet and medications. You should also drink plenty of liquids. Your stool will be a whitish color until you have expelled all of the barium. If you experience constipation, you may need to take a mild laxative. Your doctor will discuss the test results with you.
